Ingredients

Dry Ingredients

  • 3 cups All-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon Baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon Salt

Wet Ingredients

  • 1 cup Unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 1/2 cups Granulated sugar
  • 2 large Eggs
  • 2 teaspoons Vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon Peppermint extract

Coloring and Topping

  • Red food coloring Add to one half of the dough
  • Crushed candy canes For topping

Instructions

  • In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.
  • In a large mixing bowl, cream the butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  • Beat in the eggs, one at a time, followed by the vanilla and peppermint extracts.
  • Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined.
  • Divide the dough in half. Leave one half plain, and mix red food coloring into the other half until you achieve your desired color.
  • Chill both halves of the dough for at least 1 hour.
  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  • Roll out each piece of dough between two sheets of parchment paper to about 1/4 inch thickness.
  • Cut with a candy cane-shaped cookie cutter, alternating colors of dough to create stripes.
  • Place cookies on the prepared baking sheets and sprinkle with crushed candy canes.
  • Bake for 8-10 minutes or until the edges are just starting to brown.
  • Let cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

To keep your cookies fresh, store them in an airtight container at room temperature. They will stay good for about a week. If you want to keep them longer, consider freezing them!
