Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). This step is optional if you prefer to serve the apples straight from the skillet, but warming the ramekins briefly helps keep the cups cozy.
In a skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Use a nonstick or well-seasoned pan so the apples won’t stick.
Add the diced apples, brown sugar, cinnamon (if using), and a pinch of salt. Stir to combine so each apple piece gets coated.
Cook the apples for about 5–7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until they start to soften and the sugar melts into a glossy syrup. Taste for sweetness and texture; apples should be tender but not mushy.
Spoon the apple mixture into dessert cups and serve warm. Optionally, add a drizzle of warmed caramel sauce and a dollop of whipped cream or scoop of vanilla ice cream on top. Sprinkle with toasted pecans for crunch.
